The late great Sir Jimmy Shand was perhaps the finest band leader Scotland produced.  Born in the coal mining village of East Wemyss, Fife in 1908, he was a prolific writer with over 300 compositions to his name, more than Elvis Presley and The Beatles combined. In addition, he laid down the specification for the world famous Hohner Shand Morino accordian while working as an accordian salesman and demonstrator between the wars. Through his life, Jimmy received multiple decorations and awards, he was invited to play before royalty in private session, and played at many top venues worldwide including the Carnegie Hall. With his band, he regularly played on BBC Radio during the 50's and 60's and even made the top 20 in the UK hit parade, appearing on Top of the Pops - the one and only time that a Scottish Country Dance Music band has done so. Sir Jimmy Shand MBE MA passed away on December 23rd, 2000 after a long life and highly successful career, having brought great enjoyment and happiness to millions around the world.
