Sony MiniDisc Deck MDS-JB940

Product Description

Sony MiniDisc Deck MDS-JB940

Although the format may not be mainstream, a sizeable number of people remain loyal to Minidisc for its recording and reproduction quality, its ease of editing and its portability.

The Sony MDS-JB940 is considered an outstanding Minidisc deck and on a par with much more expensive offerings from both Sony and other manufacturers.  But don't take my word - read what users have to say in Audioreview below.

This deck is supplied with full keyboard (not photographed, but as-new), remote control, leads, 3 new and 3 used minidiscs and a copy of the manual.

USER REVIEWS

User Review 1

Summary:
Everything the reviewers say about the 940 is true, this is probably the best value MiniDisc deck out there. I was lucky enough to get one off a clearance table for $150 US! I have three MD decks and this one sets the standard. The A/D converters are at the level of my pro equipment, and the D/A is some of the best you'll find in this price range. Digital dubs of live classical recordings from an HHB CRD-830 are flawless. I use MD as backup to live recordings, and this deck shows why.

Strengths:
Better high freq. resolution than lower end units. Rock-solid construction. Superior power supply makes a difference in the analog signal chain. Retains ease-of-use with fabulous sound quality.

Weaknesses:
None at this price. I haven't heard the "high-end" MD decks from Denon and Sony, but they would have to work hard to surpass this unit.

User Review 2

Summary:
Very nice machine with easy sound. I am an owner of the MDS-JB930S also, and after purchasing the unit, I made lots of tests between these units. The new MDS-940 records -digital- very well, and you cannot practically see any difference from the originals. I tried lots of recordings and the deck seems to record very well. But I think the 930 is slightly better at digital recording. I can give 9.5/10 points for the 930 at digital recording, and 9/10 for the 940.

Strengths:
Very nice recordings.

Weaknesses:
MDLP is not so good. You can feel the compression at high frequencies (very hars), and slightly punchless bass.

User Review 3

Summary:
What a fantastic piece of kit, this has to be one of the best purchases I''ve made in a long time. Sound quality is superb (better than my Marantz CD 67MkII), build quality is fantastic (like a tank) and it records onto blank mds like nothing else I''ve heard. The new features like MDLP are very useful, although sound quality is not up to a great standard.

Strengths:
Everything? Sound quality, build, features.

Weaknesses:
Nothing that I''ve found so far (apart from price - but you get what you pay for)

User Review 4

Summary:
An awesome deck for recording and for serious listening! This is the first deck that i experienced which made me sit up and take notice of the minidisc format as a listening medium. Make no mistake - with proper equipment, this deck will compete with similarly priced cd players! I listen to this deck through Rotel pre/power amplification and Mirage F3 speakers, and it sounds sweet with all kinds of music. Note that this deck partners very well with the Tara Labs Ixos cable...(not sure what the equivalent cable is in the Tara range)...the cables extend the bass capability of this deck further. All up, an awesome buy - forget ES, this deck is the Bang For Your Buck winner.

Strengths:
Exceptional suite of recording facilities.

Weaknesses:
Few... an auto scroll feature for disc/track labels would be nice?!?

User Review 5

Summary:
For editing, and ease of use its hard to beat this Sony unit- and upgrade from Sony MD 520 deck. It offers more features, with improved quality and sound. The look of the 940 is very sleek and modern as well as being very well designed. Overall I am extremely happy with this product!

Strengths:
Solid feel, editing features, sound, keybourd connection

User Review 6

Summary:
For editing music, portablity, and sound it's hard to beat minidisc format. This unit was an upgrade from the Sony MD 520 deck and the sound is slightly better and offers a few more bells and whistles. The new MDLP feature offers aprox. 2 and 4 hours playback with a downgrade in sound quality from one to the other. I've used the LP2 mode on a number of occasions and found the playback to be very acceptable. In the regular mode the sound is as close to the original source as my CD burner. The look of the 940 is more along the ES line of Sony products and buttons-remote-manual etc.. are very well designed. Overall I am very satisfied with this player and consider it an important part of my music system. Other components:
Classe AMP CA-200
Myryad MDP-500
Musical Fidelity A3CD
Sony dvd 9000 ES
B&W nautilus 804

Strengths:
Solid feel, editing features, sound, keyboard connection
