Phyllis Nelson (1950 - 1998) was born in Indiana and made a number of dance and disco recordings between the late 1970's and the mid 1980s.  She had only moderate success until she recorded the self-penned ballad "Move Closer" which was quite different in style to her earlier work.  The lyrics were inspired by a long term love affair she had with a younger white man in Philadelphia. The song was produced both as a single which hit number one in the UK charts in May 1985 and as the title song of an LP.  The single remained in the UK charts for 6 months and was one of the best selling singles that year. It was also notable for being the first self-penned song by a black woman to top the UK charts. The song has returned to the UK charts with a cover version by Tom Jones in 1989, and again for Nelson in 1994 after it was used in a TV commercial.

Phyllis Nelson died of breast cancer in Los Angeles on 12th January 1998 aged 47.
