Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells is a seriously important work in the annals of popular music. The first album release by Richard Branson's Virgin Music,  it was initially a slow starter and took over a year to reach number one in October 1974, and in so doing performed the extraordinary feat of displacing Oldfield's second album, Hergest Ridge, which had hit the number one spot some 3 weeks earlier. By knocking himself off number one by his preceding record, Oldfield joined a very elite group of two other UK artists to have done so. 

Oldfield composed the entire work and played most of the instruments himself, recording each separately and laying one upon another to build up the final rendition - a fairly novel technique at the time - rather than follow the more usual method of using session musicians to record everything together.

Tubular Bells remained in the UK charts for 279 weeks, with sales of over 2,630,000 globally and it is quoted in the 50th Anniversary edition of Music Week as No 35 in the list of top selling British albums released between 1959 and 2009. After winning a Gold Record in the USA, in 1975 Mike Oldfield was awarded a Grammy for the best Instrumental Composition. The original Tubular Bells was followed by a number of sequel albums through the 1990s with Tubular Bells II (1992), Tubular Bells III (1998) and Millennium Bells (1999)
