Michael Hedges (1953 - 1997),  an American born musician, trained and graduated in composition and classical guitar at Phillips University and the Peabody Conservatory, Mount Vernon. He adapted his classical guitar training to the steel stringed instrument which he played in the finger picking style, and developed both right and left hand technique to create a very distinctive style with unusual rythms and colours.  Hedges was highly regarded by other musicians like David Crosby, Graham Nash and Pete Townsend who recognized that he was breaking new ground with the instrument.  Sadly, a promising career ended when Michael Hedges' car left the road and fell down a cliff in December 1997 while returning to his home in California. He is believed to have died instantly in the accident.
