A fine example of the best and most elegant dress watches produced by the American watchmaking industry in the late 1930s and 1940s. The Elgin watchmaking company reserved the names Lord and Lady Elgin for the highest quality and most sophisticated pieces in its range.

This is an outstanding example of the long narrow curved case watch so popular at the time and in exceptional original condition. Elgin designed this model to compete with the Gruen Curvex in the late 30s and the serial number indicates that it was manufactured in the 1939 - 1940 period. High quality mens' watches of the time were smaller and more delicately crafted than the behemoths which are currently in vogue. Today,  these exquisite vintage watches increasingly find favour as unique and elegant dress watches for discerning ladies, made no less attractive by their strong period charm and collector status.

The attractive 14K Gold Filled Elgin case and back are without any rubbing wear and generally in excellent, lightly used condition. The unusual Kreisler expansion bracelet with filled gold on either side is in fine condition and thought to be original to the watch.

This fine 21 jewel 15-0 size top quality Elgin movement is fully working, in lovely condition and still keeping good time, aided by the provision of a tightly fitting steel inner cover designed to keep contaminants out of the watch - an unusual feature for the time.

The watch still has its original Elgin storage case which is in good condition apart from the lid no longer snapping shut under spring pressure.  Also included are the original 1940 price tag for  $55, a princely sum in those days, along with a leaflet on how to care for the watch.

Altogether, this is a really outstanding collectable timepiece, in original condition with storage case and papers, and representing all the best features the American watch companies had to offer in the late 30's.

If you like this style of watch, do not pass this one by without careful examination.
