Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle were two singer / songwriters from the Glasgow area of Scotland who came together in 1959 as members of a local band. They began writing songs for the band and also for Dean Ford and the Gaylords, the group which eventually became Marmalade. In 1968, their songwriting abilities were recognised by no less than the Beatles who signed them up to write material for musicians working with their new music publishing company, Apple Records. Mary Hopkins was one such artiste to use some of this material including "Sparrow" and "The Fields of St Etienne".

Their songwriting and performing careers developed when they joined  McGuinness Flint and in 1970 wrote the hit singles "When I'm Dead and Gone" and "Malt and Barley Blues", both reaching the top ten charts. On the back of this success, they left McGuinness Flint in 1972 to form the duo Gallagher and Lyle which survived until 1979. During this period they released several albums of their own material, success coming with the Breakaway album in 1976, and top ten singles chart entrants from the album in "Heart on my Sleeve" and "I Wanna Stay with You".  Cover versions from the album included Art Garfunkel's hit with  "Breakaway", and Don Williams'  number one hit in the US country charts with his version of "Stay Young".  Many other artists have released songs by Gallagher and Lyle, details of which can be found on the internet, and their collaborations with other artistes read like a who's who of the music industry.

Following the breakup, Lyle went on to write further hits with Terry Britten including Tina Turner's "We Don't Need Another Hero" and "What's Love Got to do With It?", and Michael Jackson's "Just Good Friends".

This is a real quality pop album of its era which oozes charm and will get under your skin, but don't believe me - read what others say here.
