1940s Classic Elgin 10kt GF Wristwatch

Product Description

Classic 1943 Elgin 10k Gold Filled Wristwatch

- Attractive Late Art Deco Period Design

- Quality 15 Jewel Mechanical Movement

Like many of the mens' watches of this vintage, this fine example now appeals equally to collectors or to ladies who want a quite unique timepiece to wear and cherish.

From the high period of ornamental design, this watch is relatively restrained in styling but no less charming for that. The 10k gold filled case and base metal back are in fine, unworn condition with just the gentlest patina of age. No attempts have been made to polish it, allowing you to see its fine original condition.

The watch has an attractive, off-white curved rectangular face with gold hands and raised gold deco hour markers. The minute markers are in black and the seconds chapter is at 6 o'clock. Altogether, the face displays very little aging.

Measuring 25 x 27mm, and 35mm lug to lug, the case has attractive fluted lugs and the face is displayed within a curved and raised rectangular bezel. Whether on a male or female wrist, the watch makes a bold but refined statement, it hints that its owner has a love of the aesthetic, an appreciation of history, a sense of refinement. It says look at me, I've got class.

The domed crystal appears to be original and in very clean condition except for a  small chip on the internal surface between the 10 and 11 markers which can be seen from certain angles. This could have been easily replaced but it was felt better to leave the original crystal in place as the damage is slight and does not detract seriously from the watch.

A quality brown buffalo calf leather strap has been fitted, similar to what the watch would have had when new.

The watch was recently dismantled, fitted with a new mainspring and cleaned, serviced and timed by a professional watchmaker. It is offered for sale in a jeweller's box, in fine condition both mechanically and cosmetically, and with only slight signs of use and ageing to attest to its 67 years.

In summary, a charming watch from a bygone era which will surely appreciate in years ahead.

Finally, for the collector, the movement is a 15 jewel Elgin Grade 554, Serial No C542794, Size 8/0s. The movement was manufactured from 1940 - 1951, with this example dated 1943.  The dial, movement and back are signed.
